Brighton & Hove Albion have puzzled Chris Sutton with their recent treatment of Leandro Trossard. The winger is also a transfer target of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Sutton cannot understand why Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi left the Belgian out of their last Premier League line-up. Trossard only featured as an unused substitute at Everton last Tuesday. He could only watch on whilst his Amex Stadium teammates sealed their 4-1 win.
De Zerbi also omitted Trossard from Brighton’s matchday side altogether in the FA Cup last Saturday. The Italian tactician elected against even offering him a seat on the bench at the Riverside Stadium. But his south coast side still secured a 5-1 win at a Championship team.
Trossard had been enjoying a strong season with Brighton until their past two games. The 28-year-old has provided seven goals and three assists over his 16 Premier League outings. No Seagulls star has struck as many goals or offered more assists than him so far this term.
The Waterschei-born dynamo also featured in all three of Belgium’s Group F games during their dire World Cup campaign. Although he failed to score or provide an assist as Roberto Martinez’s team fell at the first hurdle. Trossard has been a regular for Belgium since 2020.
Tottenham are battling Newcastle for Trossard’s transfer from Brighton
Tottenham are also battling Newcastle to secure Trossard’s transfer from Brighton during the January window. The Evening Standard reports Spurs are weighing up making an offer. Boss Antonio Conte is keen to add another attacking option to his arsenal in north London.
But Dean Jones reports Newcastle or Chelsea are more likely to secure Trossard’s transfer from Brighton. The Toon and Blues have a superior pulling power to Tottenham in the mid-season sales for the Seagulls’ £15m arrival from KRC Genk by Graham Potter in June 2019.
Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham all want Trossard’s transfer following his form so far in 2022/23 with Brighton. But recent events at the Amex have puzzled Sutton whilst De Zerbi omits the Red Devils star. The Seagulls are next in action as hosts to Liverpool on Saturday.
“I’m not sure why Brighton have left Leandro Trossard out of their past couple of games,” Sutton wrote in his column for BBC Sport. “He scored a hat-trick at Anfield and always seemed to me to be one of their main men. But they are still dangerous without him.”
