Darren Ambrose has claimed that Tottenham’s signing of Ivan Perisic is ‘unusual’ but a ‘statement’ signing by the club, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder, who is a boyhood Spurs fan, added that the Champions League-bound side don’t normally sign a player of Perisic’s age.

At 33-years-old, after Perisic’s contract at Inter Milan expired, he headed for the exit door and reunited with his former boss, Antonio Conte in England.

A player with a wealth of experience, both on the domestic and international stage, Perisic has been added to provide much-needed winning experience to this Spurs side.

That was touched upon by Ambrose, who praised Tottenham for the call to bring the Croatia international to the club.

“Perisic was a free transfer but that was a statement signing, for me,” said Ambrose. “It’s a signing that is unusual for Spurs to sign a player that’s 33-years-old and he has no sell-on value.

“He is signing because he is an experienced winner. Buying him for the now, so that’s a big one.”

WHAT CAN TOTTENHAM ACHIEVE?

Someone like Conte hasn’t been brought in just to sit fourth in the table again next season, he is a trophy-winning coach and he will want to do it in north London.

The only issue facing Spurs is that the club and the players don’t have the mentality or winning experience their Italian coach has.

But that’s why he is in the dugout to change that mindset, added with him bringing in players like Perisic to help them push over that line.

The question that needs to be asked is what can Tottenham win next season? The FA Cup and the League Cup are going to be the main aim because they have a realistic chance of adding those trophies to their cabinet.

Spurs will push for the others, but in truth, it would be a massive shock if Spurs win either the Premier League title or the Champions League next season.
