Tottenham told Everton 26-year-old ‘wishes’ he played for Ange Postecoglou

Euro 2024 is around the corner and the safest bet you can make is that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin won’t be making Gareth Southgate’s squad.

At Euro 2020, the 26-year-old was picked to play behind then-Tottenham striker Harry Kane, but since then, injuries have just ruined the player and now he is struggling for form and goals.

On Saturday, even though Dominic Calvert-Lewin was involved in Everton’s equaliser, he failed to score for the 12th straight Premier League game as Sean Dyche’s side recorded a 2-2 draw against Spurs.

Martin Keown thinks the Englishman ‘wishes’ he was playing for Ange Postecoglou’s free-flowing Tottenham because of the chances a player like Richarlison gets, as he told Football Focus.

This time last season, whilst playing in a defensive system under Antonio Conte, the Brazil star only scored one Premier League goal.

But fast forward to the present and he has nine goals from his last eight matches, as he is thriving like he used to at Goodison Park.

Martin Keown thinks Richarlison misses his fair share of chances too, but unlike Dominic Calvet-Lewin, he continues to get fed.

“It’s interesting with Calvert-Lewin,” said Keown. “I bet he wishes that he was in the Spurs team, with the amount of opportunities Richarlison takes to score.

“He has nine from eight*, but nonetheless, he does miss a few and he is now starting to hit the ground running, Richarlison.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs time

Yes, Calvert-Lewis hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season when he has now also managed to stay away from the treatment room.

But, as of this moment, he has played 25 games in all competitions for Everton. The last time he played as many matches was during the 20/21 season and he struck 16 Premier League goals.

The constant injuries, constant stop-start nature to his play, lack of rhythm, constant change in managers and the defensive system he is playing in doesn’t help.

If Everton don’t suffer any more points deductions, they will be fine. That’s when they need to stick with Calvert-Lewin, back him and come back next season when he will be back to his best again.
