Troy Deeney is certain that David Raya would be an ‘excellent replacement’ for Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur. The Brentford goalkeeper is being lined up for a transfer.

Spurs are likely to explore replacing Lloris in the summer with the France icon now 36 years old. He has also made a number of high-profile mistakes this season and will end the term on the sidelines. The veteran has not played in the Premier League since April due to injury.

Interim Tottenham manager Ryan Mason confirmed at the start of May that Lloris suffered a season-ending muscle injury. The shot-stopper sustained the blow in Spurs’ 6-1 defeat at Newcastle United. He had only recently returned from a knee injury sustained in February.

Tottenham are targeting Raya’s transfer to replace Lloris

Lloris’ errors and injury troubles have convinced Tottenham to explore a transfer for a new goalkeeper with Brentford star Raya an option. TEAMtalk reported back in March that the 27-year-old’s agents believe the Spaniard is high on Spurs’ shortlist ahead of the summer.

Raya has also told Brentford in no uncertain terms that he will not sign a new contract with the club. His existing deal will expire in June 2024. But the Bees will want £35m to cash in, per The Sun, with Manchester United also interested after his 11 clean sheets this season.

Now, Deeney has backed Raya as an ‘excellent’ replacement for Lloris with the Frenchman certainly leaving Tottenham in the next transfer window. He has been in north London for the past 11 years. Andre Villas-Boas paid Lyon £13m to sign Lloris back in September 2012.

“Their captain and long-serving keeper, Hugo Lloris, [is] definitely on his way this summer,” Deeney wrote in a column for The Sun. He added: “In fact – and Brentford fans won’t thank me for saying this – Bees keeper David Raya would be an excellent replacement for Lloris.”

Lloris will consider his options amid a very lucrative offer

Lloris will explore his options in the summer with the Tottenham captain’s agent confirming so to La Parisien this May. The French publication quoted the Bleus icon’s representative as stating: “He will study all the options available to him. [But] there is nothing concrete yet.”

One option for the 145-cap 2018 World Cup winner could be a very lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. The Athletic also reported this May that an unnamed team in the Arabian Peninsula is ready to more than triple Lloris’ £100k-a-week wage to seal his transfer from Tottenham.

The unnamed team has already tabled the offer to Lloris but must also reach an agreement with Tottenham for his transfer. He still has a year left on the goalkeeper’s deal with Spurs. But it is unlikely that Lloris will stay in London as their No2. Even if he is in no rush to leave.
