Roman Weidenfeller feels Yann Sommer ‘didn’t perform well’ for Switzerland at the World Cup. The Borussia Monchengladbach star is also of transfer interest to Tottenham Hotspur.
Sommer featured at likely his last edition of the quadrennial FIFA tournament in Qatar this winter. The 33-year-old turned out between the sticks in three of Nati’s four matches. But he left Weidenfeller unimpressed after a 1-0 defeat to Brazil before then losing 6-1 to Portugal.

The Selecao ran riot in the Round of 16 to send Switzerland home as Fernando Santo’s side always kept Sommer busy. He could do nothing to stop Goncalo Ramos from breaking the deadlock with a thunderous shot. The striker also chipped the goalkeeper for his hat-trick.

Borussia Dortmund icon and ambassador Weidenfeller felt Sommer could have done more to keep the score down, however. Ramos drilled Diogo Dalot’s cross home through the 80-cap ace’s legs for his second goal. But Sommer did well to deny Ramos before half-time.
His turbulent time in Qatar also followed Sommer conceding 14 goals across 10 Bundesliga games this term. The Morges native had kept three clean sheets, as well, before picking up a knee injury in October. It threatened to rule the goalkeeper out of this year’s World Cup.

Sommer has still attracted transfer interest from Tottenham and Bayern Munich
Despite a shaky World Cup and a not-so-perfect season at Borussia Monchengladbach this term, Sommer has still attracted transfer interest from Tottenham and Bayer Munich. Per Dean Jones, Spurs have sounded out what the goalkeeper intends to do next during 2023.
The Swiss stopper is out of contract at Borussia-Park in June after what will have been nine years with Monchengladbach. The FC Basel product moved to North Rhine-Westphalia in 2014. But Sky Germany also reports Bayern Munich have Sommer on their shortlist now.
Der FCB are considering raiding their Bundesliga rival in January after losing Manuel Neuer for the rest of the season. The German fractured his right leg whilst skiing after the World Cup and required surgery. Sommer is Bayern Munich’s top target to join them in January.

Weidenfeller is very critical of the goalkeeper Spurs and Der FCB are interested in
Tottenham and Bayern Munich are interested in a declining goalkeeper, however, as far as Weidenfeller is concerned with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Sommer. The 34-year-old has conceded 50 and 60 goals in 31 and 33 games during the past two full Bundesliga seasons.
Weidenfeller told Sky Germany: “He has been ailing for a long time in the Bundesliga. [He] has only played 10 games out of a possible 15 appearances at Borussia Monchengladbach.
“He came out of injury. For a long time, it was unclear whether he would even be able to play in the World Cup… And in the Bundesliga, with the exception of the Bayern Munich game, it wasn’t as if his performance was that great.
“In the 6-1 [defeat] against Portugal, he was to blame for two goals. Or he definitely had If there was an opportunity to prevent it. He didn’t perform well in the Brazil game, either. He might have been able to save a goal or two.”
