Royal Antwerp are top of the league and had two former Tottenham players to thank on Sunday with Vincent Janssen and Toby Alderweireld scoring.

With no Premier League or Football League action this weekend, many in England turned their attention to European action.

The Bundesliga will have raked in viewers from England whilst others watched chaos unfold in Italy as Juventus drew 2-2 with Salernitana.

Over in Belgium, two former Tottenham players took centre stage with Royal Antwerp continuing their fine start to the season.

Royal Antwerp are top of the league

Antwerp have emerged as the new force in Belgian football thanks to investment from property developer Paul Gheysens.

Mark van Bommel is in as manager and Antwerp appear to have real ambition.

On Sunday, Antwerp travelled away to Cercle Brugge and came away with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win.

The two goalscorers on the day will be very familiar to Tottenham fans with Vincent Janssen and Toby Aldereweireld both finding the net.

That win means Antwerp have won eight from eight in the league this season and sit five points clear at the top of the table.

Tottenham fans may now take a close interest in Antwerp’s fortunes, especially if they can continue this unbeaten start.

Alderweireld was hugely popular at Tottenham, becoming a vital first-team player following his 2015 arrival from Atletico Madrid.

The Belgian defender racked up nearly 250 appearances for Tottenham before leaving for Al-Duhail in Water back in 2021.

Now 33, Alderweireld has returned to his native Belgium and is playing a key role in this ambitious Antwerp side.

Janssen didn’t quite go the same way, struggling for goals after joining Tottenham from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2016.

The Dutchman managed just six goals in 42 games for Tottenham before spells with Fenerbahce and Monterrey.

Janssen and Alderweireld have reunited in Belgium this summer and their decision could see them clinch a league title with Antwerp racing to the top of the league – something that would mean a lot after missing out on the Premier League title with Tottenham.
