The youngster will be calling White Hart Lane home for some time yet.

As announced on Tottenham Hotspur’s official website this afternoon, the club have handed a new improved contract to Eric Dier; one which is set to keep him in North London until 2020.

The 21-year-old has opened the new campaign as a firm fixture in Mauricio Pochettino’s line-up; starting in all four of the team’s Premier League fixtures – albeit rather surprisingly, in a new midfield role.

And just to affirm Pochettino and Tottenham’s belief in Dier as an important player for the future, his contract extension looks to be the biggest vote of confidence yet.

Dier joined Tottenham from Sporting CP in the summer of 2014, and went on to make in excess of 30 appearances during his first season back in England.

His versatility has proved to be a useful asset for the club, having started his debut campaign at right-back, shifted across to his favoured position at the heart of the back four and now edged up the field into a midfield berth.

The England U21 international will now be hoping to carry his personal feel-good factor into Sunday’s trip to Sunderland, with Spurs still looking for their first top-flight victory of the season.
