Tottenham Hotspur missed out on a deal for Thierry Small but St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson is delighted to have landed him.

Spurs pulled off a couple of deals on deadline day.

Chelsea youngster Jude Soonsup-Bell arrived to bolster the development ranks before Spurs struck their big move.

Sporting wing back Pedro Porro arrived after a month-long transfer saga, penning a loan deal with an obligation to buy in the summer.

That was pretty good business on the final day for Tottenham, and adding to Arnaut Danjuma’s arrival means this was a decent window.

Yet Tottenham did have one more deal in mind for January, only to end up missing out.

Tottenham missed out on Thierry Small

The Athletic (31/01, 15:00) reported that Tottenham had been in talks with Southampton over a deal for Thierry Small.

However, terms couldn’t be agreed either with Southampton or Small, meaning the deal never really got off the ground.

Small, 18, left Everton to join Southampton in August 2021 as he chased a first-team pathway with the Saints.

Small has only played once for the Saints first team though and spent time on loan with Port Vale earlier this season.

Considered to be a real talent for the future, left back Small was seemingly being lined up for Tottenham’s development ranks.

By the end of deadline day, Small did get a move as he made a loan switch to Scotland with St Mirren.

That will hopefully aid Small’s development and maybe Tottenham can revisit a deal at the end of the season.

St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson – a former Spurs youngster as a player – told the club’s official website that Small is a player with ‘lots of pace’.

Robinson believes Small will provide ideal competition at left wing back and will provide a number of key attributes, including pace, energy, strength and quality on the ball.

“Thierry is a young player with lots of pace and lots of energy,” said Robinson. “He gives us another option on that left-hand side at left wing-back. Scott Tanser has played a lot of games with no competition in that area and if he got injured or we needed to change it for any reason we had no option, so it was important we brought someone in. He’ll bring us pace, energy, strength and good quality on the ball. We are looking forward to having him in and he’ll certainly add to the squad,” he added.
