Rumoured Tottenham target Milan Skriniar is set to end months of speculation by signing a new contract with Inter Milan, ending one of the longest transfer sagas in 2022.

According to Foot Mercato, the 27-year-old defender will pen a new deal with the Serie A giants after it looked certain that Skriniar was set to leave Inter in 2023, with Tottenham and PSG the two clubs leading the chase to sign the Slovakian centre-back.

L’Equipe had even reported in the summer that a £70m offer from Skriniar from PSG was on the table. However, this bid was knocked back by Inter as the Nerazzurri look to come out on top of this drawn-out transfer saga, much to the dismay of the French giants and Antonio Conte’s Tottenham.

The north London side had been linked with Skriniar with the good part of a year, with Conte and Fabio Paratici eager to bring the centre-back to the Premier League. However, the decision has now been made by the player that he will stay in Milan with Inter.

As per Foot Mercato, the deciding factor in Skriniar signing a new contract with Inter was the player’s wife, who had a change of heart on leaving Italy, with the report also stating that the defender feels happy in Lombardy with Simone Inzaghi’s side despite a mixed season.

Inter pipped FC Barcelona to second place in their UEFA Champions League group stage where they will face FC Porto in the round of 16. However, Skriniar’s side sit seventh in the Serie A standings and a whole 14 points off league leaders Napoli.

Tottenham’s defending under Conte since the Italian’s arrival has been one of the best in the Premier League, yet supporters will agree that an added world-class presence in the backline has the potential to take the north London side from potential contenders to out-right challengers in all competitions they compete in. Something Skriniar would have brought.

The 27-year-old is at the peak of his career and is regarded by many as one of the best defenders in all of Europe. And Tottenham signing Skriniar would have been one impressive coup from Conte, who has previous success with the Slovakian during their time together at Inter.
