FC Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay is reportedly keen on signing for Chelsea after the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite recent rumours that Tottenham are chasing the Netherlands international.

According to AS via Sports Illustrated, the 28-year-old attacker is open to moving to west London despite having the chance to sign for Chelsea in the summer and ultimately deciding on staying with Barcelona, with the Blues instead bringing in his La Liga teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

With 90min claiming that Tottenham are also interested in the former Olympique Lyonnais star, a battle between two of London’s biggest clubs could ignite in January with Chelsea now seemingly back in the mix for Depay, with the attacker himself favouring a move to Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, Depay is reportedly one of Barcelona’s biggest earners at £160,000-a-week. And given the Catalan side’s financial problems, offloading a player like the Dutch international would greatly help in balancing the books ahead of 2023.

And Barcelona will look to have no problems in January in offloading Depay, especially with the attacker keen on signing for Chelsea in a move that could be quite the coup for the Blues, with Graham Potter in need of some firepower despite the options at his disposal.

It might seem odd to some that Tottenham missing out on a top player from Barcelona might be considered a good thing. Yet for Antonio Conte’s side, losing out on Depay to Chelsea will hardly be the end of the world given the options the north London side already have in their squad.

Richarlison has proven to be an excellent backup to Harry Kane, and the return of Dejan Kulusevski from injury is a massive boost for Spurs, especially with the winger set for a month off due to Sweden’s absence in the World Cup.
