Chelsea are in talks to appoint Tottenham Hotspur target Julian Nagelsmann as their new manager and positive progress is being made.

The Blues sacked Graham Potter on Sunday night and are moving quickly to try and find a replacement.

Nagelsmann has become the top target having been sacked by Bayern Munich in March.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg now claims that talks between Nagelsmann and Chelsea have been ‘positive’.

Plettenberg adds that ‘thinks are looking good’ for Nagelsmann to become the new Chelsea manager as things stand.

Nothing is done just yet but Chelsea appear to be growing in confidence that they can secure Nagelsmann.

It’s worth noting that two key decision-makers at Chelsea – Laurence Stewart and Christopher Vivell – already know Nagelsmann from their time at Red Bull.

Julian Nagelsmann developments are mixed news for Tottenham

On the face of it, Nagelsmann’s talks with Chelsea going well is pretty bad news for Tottenham.

Spurs have been interested in making Nagelsmann their new manager ever since he became available.

Antonio Conte has gone and Nagelsmann has been one of the favourites for the Tottenham job even if it seemed like a pretty ambitious move.

Nagelsmann appears to prefer Chelsea though, leaving Tottenham to miss out on a top manager.

Yet this may actually be a positive for Tottenham too.

It felt like Tottenham would be left waiting and waiting to find out if Nagelsmann was actually interested.

At least if Nagelsmann goes to Chelsea in the coming days or weeks, Tottenham can rule him out and focus on other targets.

Of course, landing a manager of Nagelsmann’s quality would have been perfect for Spurs but indecision was a major problem in 2021.

Spurs must be more streamlined in their approach this time and they couldn’t really afford to be clinging on for Nagelsmann anyway.
