Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a move for Southampton full-back Cedric Soares during the summer transfer window.
Back in June, the Daily Mirror suggested that Tottenham had joined the likes of Barcelona and Juventus in the race to sign Southampton full-back Cedric Soares as they looked to replace Kyle Walker.
Cedric had been an excellent replacement for former Saints man Nathaniel Clyne during his first two seasons in the Premier League, so it probably came as little surprise that some of the biggest clubs in Europe were having a look at him.
Ultimately however, Tottenham’s replacement for Walker would arrive during the final hours of the transfer window as they landed Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain.
While Aurier is yet to show exactly why Spurs spent £23 million (via BBC Sport) on bringing him to the club, it is surely fair to say that the Portuguese’s form on the south coast has given Mauricio Pochettino little reason to believe that they missed a trick.
Cedric has struggled to make a similar impact to the one that he has made in previous years this term, and certainly would not get into the team ahead of Kieran Trippier, who has been excellent this year with three assists under his belt already.
That tally already matches Cedric’s best return in a single season since arriving in England, and it must not be forgotten that Spurs boast the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League since the start of last season, having only conceded 31 goals in 45 matches.
And with Aurier likely to get even better as he settles into his new surroundings, Pochettino will feel extremely pleased that he made the right call if Cedric’s form continues as it is.
