Tottenham Hotspur are finally closing in on a first signing in almost 18 months, as Leeds United winger Jack Clarke is all set to join this week.

The 18-year-old impressed for Leeds last season, and having impressed under Marcelo Bielsa, he’s done enough to tempt Mauricio Pochettino into a deal.

The Guardian claim that a £10million deal – rising to £11.5million – is imminent, but there has been a late twist in the tale, as he’ll head back to Leeds on loan for the season.

It’s probably great for Clarke’s development that he’ll have another full season at Elland Road, but it means Spurs will still need another attacker to bring in and beef up Pochettino’s options.

Back in May, Voetbal International in the Netherlands reported that Tottenham were expected to bid for PSV Eindhoven star Steven Bergwijn after the Champions League final – but as things stand, no bid has been made.

Spurs have focused on Clarke for now, but another winger may well be wanted with Clarke not even really arriving until 2020, and Bergwijn should be a priority.

The 23-year-old speedster hit 15 goals and 13 assists last season, and is now ready for a big move away from PSV, with Tottenham making sense as the next destination to continue his development.

Bergwijn’s ability to play as a striker means that he can offer cover for Harry Kane as well, and with questions about Erik Lamela’s long-term future, signing him now doesn’t even have to have an impact on Clarke’s eventual development.

Adding Bergwijn now as competition for Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min would make Spurs a real threat, and they’ll only get more dangerous once Clarke joins up with the squad in 2020, so that decision by Pochettino and co to send Clarke back out on loan means Bergwijn is needed now.
