Steven Bergwijn didn’t impress against Liverpool on Tuesday night as Ajax were dramatically beaten 2-1 by a late Joel Matip goal.
Ajax headed to Anfield with genuine hope of picking up a positive result.
The Amsterdam giants hammered Rangers 4-0 in their opening Champions League game last week.
Combine that with Liverpool’s 4-1 thrashing away at Napoli last week and the Dutch giants may have felt that this was their time to pick up a big result at Anfield.

Steven Bergwijn didn’t impress against Liverpool
It didn’t quite go that way though as Ajax saw a point slip through their fingers in the dying seconds.
Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool in the first half before Mohammed Kudus popped up with a powerful left-footed strike.
Chances came and went for Liverpool but they did eventually grab a late winner with Joel Matip proving to be the unlikely goalscoring hero.
Ajax head back to Amsterdam empty-handed and will feel that they were a little unlucky to come away with nothing.
One man who maybe didn’t impress for Ajax though was winger Steven Bergwijn.
Sold by Tottenham Hotspur for around £28million this summer, Bergwijn has made a strong start to life back in the Netherlands.
Bergwijn was just never able to kick on after a strong start at Tottenham and Antonio Conte decided to cut ties with the Dutchman this summer.
A game against Liverpool provided Bergwijn with a chance to prove himself on English soil once again but it passed him by.
Voetbal Primeur rated Bergwijn at just 5.5 out of 10, suggesting that he ‘couldn’t make his mark’ in England once again.
They even added that, even though Bergwijn has been brought to Ajax for big matches like this, the winger turned in a ‘poor performance’ against Liverpool.
This will feel like a missed opportunity for Bergwijn and one that will back up Tottenham’s idea that selling was probably the right decision.
