Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama says Champions League football is just a bonus.

After qualifying for the Champions League at the end of last season, Tottenham splashed out to make Victor Wanyama their first summer signing.

Spurs paid £11 million to snap up the Kenyan from Southampton, with three major reasons behind the move.

Wanyama had previously played under Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton, he was a proven Premier League performer, and he had Champions League experience with Celtic, even scoring in a win over Barcelona.

After spending three seasons out of Europe’s elite competition, you might imagine that the chance to play in it again was the driving force behind his desire to join Spurs.

Speaking at the pre-Bayer Leverkusen press conference on Tuesday, Wanyama insisted that Champions League football was a secondary reason behind his switch.

He said, at the press conference screened by Press Bureau TV: “I wanted to come to a top club to compete for the title.

“Champions League is a bonus to get the experience in Europe. We are glad we have it, we hope we can keep it going for many years.”

After playing for a team in the upper half of the table in recent seasons but not looking like competing for the title, Wanyama realises he has stepped up a level, and prioritises the ‘bread and butter’ of Premier League action.

Spurs are currently in fifth place in the division, but just three points off leaders Manchester City who they beat last month.
