Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has told Football.London that he truly believes Jose Mourinho wants to play attacking football.

When Spurs appointed Mourinho as their new boss almost a year ago, some were worried about the style of play.

Tottenham had been progressive and exciting under Mauricio Pochettino, but those aren’t really words anyone has used to describe Mourinho’s sides over the years.

Mourinho has usually prioritised defensive over attack, and fans had real fear that Mourinho’s style of play is just outdated in the modern game.

Spurs have been generally exciting going forward this season, save for a couple of games, such as Monday’s rather uninspiring 1-0 win over Burnley.

With Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Gareth Bale all on board, Spurs have some incredible firepower, and Mourinho appears to be getting the best out of Kane and Son at least.

Ahead of tonight’s game with Royal Antwerp, defender Alderweireld has now admitted that he really does think that Mourinho wants to play attacking football at Tottenham, and thinks Spurs are heading in the right direction.

Alderweireld feels that Mourinho has a ‘special thing’ with how he thinks about football and how he wants to play, praising the Tottenham boss for his philosophy – something that people haven’t really done for a while.

“I feel every manager has their own view on football. I’ve been lucky to work under some unbelievable managers with their own view and own thinking about football and Mourinho is the same. He has a special thing about how he thinks about football and how he wants to play.”

“Of course sometimes you need time to adapt but I think you can see this season we are going in the right direction, not only myself but the team, and we all believe in the way he wants to play. He wants to play attacking football. Sometimes it doesn’t go your way but that’s top football and top sports. I know for sure we are going in the right direction,” he added.
