Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has conceded Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku will push Harry Kane right to the end for the golden boot.

Lukaku led the race last season until Kane scored eight goals in his final two games to overtake the then Everton striker and win the award for a second successive season.

The Spurs star has been in unstoppable form over the past month, but Vertonghen believes his international teammate Romelu Lukaku will push him hard, even if he will be doing his best to stop him later this month.

Lukaku has scored 11 goals in his first 10 games for United, and was on target for Belgium against Cyprus last night.

Vertonghen told SkySports: “In my eyes it is difficult to split them. I think they will keep playing for the Golden Boot until the last game of the season like they did last year.

“They’re both totally different, to be honest. Harry has his qualities and Romelu has his and, to be fair, I would rather not play against them.

“I’ve got them both in my team so that’s something, but in two weeks I have to face Romelu, so I will need my fellow centre-backs.”

Manchester United spent £75 million to sign Lukaku from Everton this summer, and it is a fee which is beginning to look cheap.

Kane is being touted by the press at more than twice that figure, and if Lukaku can match him or even better him this season, the Red Devils’ big deal will look even better.
