Tottenham Hotspur star Toby Alderweireld has been linked with an exit from the club this summer.

Tottenham star Mousa Dembele addressed the media whilst away on international duty with Belgium, and responded to questions asking him for his opinion on teammate Toby Alderweireld’s uncertain future, as quoted by the Evening Standard.

The 29-year-old centre-back has played a peripheral role for Spurs this season, although injuries have played a major part in his limited game-time.

Davinson Sanchez has impressed whilst filling in for the former Atletico Madrid and Southampton ace – something that has made his path back to the first-team particularly tricky.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are leading the race to sign Alderweireld.

The Belgian and Tottenham have reached an impasse regarding talks over a potential new deal, and it would be no surprise to see him leave for pastures new in the summer.

Dembele was asked about his teammate’s future, when speaking to reporters, and labelled the 29-year-old as a very important player for Tottenham, as quoted by the Evening Standard:

“I think he’s fit but for details I think it’s better he speaks with you because it’s difficult to talk about other players. Obviously he’s a very good player, a very important player. Here in the national team we have a lot of good players and at Tottenham as well we have a lot of good players, so it’s always difficult to talk about.”

Alderweireld is considered to be one of the finest centre-backs in the world, so selling him might be viewed as a step backwards by Spurs, but if he fails to commit his long-term future to the club, Daniel Levy will surely look to get rid of him this summer, in an attempt to get maximum value for the Belgian.
