Tottenham Hotspur ace admits underestimating Gent.
Tottenham’s Mousa Dembele in action with Gent’s Brecht Dejaegere
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has told Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad that the side made a major error against Gent.
Speaking after the 1-0 away defeat, Dembele admits their opponents were more motivated to win the game.
He said: “I think we underestimated Gent. They seemed in any case more motivated than us.
If anybody should have been aware of Gent’s quality, it is Belgian international Dembele and his compatriot Toby Alderweireld, who also started the game.
Tottenham never really got going, slumping to a 1-0 loss without really threatening.
They have now gone three of their last four games without scoring, and Dembele’s comments underline that if Tottenham are not at full throttle, they are not capable of closing out matches.
Mauricio Pochettino’s team play with lots of intensity, but this is the second similar spell this season where their form has dipped.
Fortunately they have a chance to redress this defeat in the second leg at Wembley next week, but they have to get their attitude right and cannot afford to be at all complacent. Hopefully the side will have learned their lesson.
