Tottenham star said he backed Nicolas Pepe to be a success.

Arsenal announced a club record deal for Nicolas Pepe yesterday, clinching a £72 million move.

It was a real coup, an unexpected one up against Arsenal’s previously modest transfer window.

One person who did not expect Pepe to end up at Arsenal is Tottenham star Moussa Sissoko.

Sissoko spoke in May to French channel Canal Football Club, quoted by Le10 Sport, and said he would back Pepe wherever he ended up.

He even made a plea for Pepe to come and join him at Tottenham.

Sissoko said: “He has already demonstrated his full potential with Angers, this year he confirmed it with Lille, what he does is really exceptional.

“I do not know where he’ll go, but I wish him the best in his future club, and if it’s in England, why not Tottenham?”

Tottenham were never really in the running to sign Pepe, focusing their attentions elsewhere.

Depending on how he gets on at Arsenal, they might end up wishing they had gone in for him.

One thing’s likely, and that’s Sissoko will be backtracking on his wish for Pepe to be a big hit now he is with Tottenham’s bitter rivals.
