Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker has taken to Twitter to send a message to former club Sheffield United after they were confirmed as the League One champions.

The Blades had already clinched promotion with a 2-1 win at Northampton Town earlier this month, but they were crowned as champions on Saturday afternoon.

24 hours after United beat Port Vale 3-0, second-placed Bolton Wanderers lost 1-0 at Oldham Athletic, meaning Chris Wilder’s Blades were handed the League One title.

Wilder’s men celebrated in style with a 3-0 thumping of local rivals Bradford City on Monday afternoon, and the planning can now start for the club’s return to the Championship.

Sheffield United were relegated to League One back in 2011, and after three failed play-off campaigns, the Blades are finally back in the second tier – and could face off against city rivals Sheffield Wednesday next term, though the Owls are battling for promotion to the Premier League.

Two boyhood Blades fans – manager Wilder and striker Billy Sharp – have been at the forefront of Sheffield United’s promotion back to the Championship, and another lifelong fan has taken to Twitter to react to the club’s title win.

Tottenham Hotspur right back Kyle Walker was born and bred in Sheffield, and came up through the ranks at Bramall Lane before earning a 2009 move to White Hart Lane, where he has become arguably the Premier League’s top right back.

Walker hasn’t forgotten his boyhood club though, and sent a message on Twitter after the club’s title win was confirmed, congratulating the Blades on their promotion and being confirmed as champions.
