Jan Vertonghen wishes Tottenham star speedy recovery despite World Cup rivalry.

You can’t blame Belgium for hoping they won’t have to go up against Harry Kane at the World Cup this summer.

Kane is England’s biggest goalscoring threat and hopes to be 100 per cent when the countries meet in the group stages.

Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen was asked this weekend if he hopes Kane remains injured for the match, but the centre-back had only best wishes for his Tottenham teammate.

Speaking to Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad, Vertonghen said: “Harry Kane is now injured, I regret it for Tottenham.

“We will also have to play against a fit Kane at the World Cup. It does not matter to me all.

“I prefer a fit Kane, whether he is an opponent of us or not.”

Vertonghen is right to be putting his club mindset first – Tottenham still have so much to play for.

There is the FA Cup semi-final next month against Manchester United, which Kane is doubtful for.

Spurs are also battling to qualify for the Champions League next season by finishing in the top four, and next weekend’s match away to Chelsea is crucial.

You can’t blame Vertonghen for sharing the same feelings as Spurs fans, just wishing Kane back as quickly as possible, irrespective of whether he has to play against him at the World Cup.
