Tottenham Hotspur are still well in contention to win the Premier League title.
Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen in action
Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen spoke to Sky Sports and highlighted how his side face an uphill battle if they are to catch Chelsea at the top of the Premier League, and highlighted how the prospect of four games in 12 days is a daunting one for him.
The Belgian centre-back has formed a formidable partnership with Toby Alderweireld at the heart of Tottenham’s defence, and Mauricio Pochettino’s men seem even more solid since they have been playing with three central defenders.
Their record of 21 goals conceded in 28 Premier League games underlines their solidarity as a team, and they will need to continue that kind of defensive stubbornness if they are to have any chance whatsoever of catching the Blues.
Vertonghen though, stressed how he and his teammates have to be realistic in their hopes of winning the league title this season, when speaking to Sky Sports, highlighting the two weeks ahead as a period that could prove to be physically taxing:
“We’re trying to catch Chelsea, but it will be very hard. They look very strong at the moment and you have to be realistic. Travel to Russia on Monday, play Tuesday, play Burnley away on Saturday, play Swansea away on Wednesday, tough times. But we are used to it and fit enough to cope with it.”
The next two games for the Lilywhites could prove to be vital in their chances of success in the league.
Consecutive away trips to Burnley and Swansea City will provide them will a real test of their mettle, and a return of six points could see them close the gap on Chelsea, with the Blues facing games against Crystal Palace and Manchester City respectively.
