Tottenham Hotspur were the only club who failed to strengthen their squad this summer.
Tottenham star Eric Dier spoke to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, and responded when asked whether he is concerned that his manager failed to bring in any new signings this summer, as quoted by Four Four Two.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino failed to bring in any new faces this summer, and many fans and pundits alike have been predicting that they could very well miss out on the top four as a result.
Tottenham finished in third spot in the Premier League table last season, and despite Pochettino and his players earning rave reviews for the manner in which they have gone about their business in recent years, the pressure really is on them now to end their 10-year wait for a major trophy.
Dier responded to reporters who suggested that he and his teammates might struggle this season, given the fact that there have been no new arrivals, as quoted by Four Four Two:
“It’s a great challenge for us to shut everyone up, really. We are going to enjoy that challenge. We’ve got a fantastic squad here, fantastic players throughout the team in every position. To strengthen it is not easy as well. You can look at all the other teams around us – they might have signed players, but not many of those players that they’ve signed are better than the players they’ve already got. We all really enjoy training together, playing together, being with each other. The manager said it before – we’re in a fight but we’re having to use different tools. We’ve known that for the last three years and we have to try and compensate for what other clubs can do in different ways, with our attitude, our work ethic, our desire.”
Next up for Spurs is a home game against Fulham at Wembley on Saturday, and another win there would be the perfect response to the recent criticism that they have received.
