Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier is wasting his opportunity to lay down a marker in midfield, but is he as tired as Harry Kane?

Two summers ago Tottenham Hotspur were battling to stave off interest in Eric Dier.

The Sun reported Spurs valued Dier at £50 million, with The Mail reporting how the England ace was frustrated by the club signing Victor Wanyama following his excellent season in midfield.

Injuries have finally meant Dier is getting a run of games in midfield again, with Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks all struggling for fitness in recent weeks.

The problem for Dier is, his form has been off.

He was poor at the weekend against Liverpool and even in the win over Manchester United he did not play well.

Strong performances in midfield would see Dier stand a great chance of holding down the position full time, and he is at risk of blowing the opportunity.

Come January, Spurs have the chance to strengthen and central midfield will be a priority.

In Dier’s defence, he has a legitimate excuse for below par displays.

Just like Harry Kane, Dier looks tired and has not had a break due to his World Cup involvement.

He is being asked to cover more ground per game than Kane because of the position he plays, and it is little wonder he is out of form.

This opportunity for Dier to show why he can be Tottenham’s top midfielder is coming at a bad time for him, and he needs to find a way to grit it out and show what he is all about.
