Hugo Lloris was awarded the man-of-the-match trophy for his performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s stunning 2-1 win over Marseille on Tuesday night – and he gave a brilliant five-word reaction on BT Sport to Des Kelly when given award.

A hotly-anticipated clash, Marseille’s fans were well up for it – even from the night before. Video footage emerged online of Marseille fans setting off fireworks outside the Tottenham hotel in the middle of the night, at 3am.

Spurs were woeful in the first half. Eventually, Chancel Mbemba sent the Marseille fans into raptures – heading home. But Tottenham – with Antonio Conte in the stands – they were much better in the second 45. Clement Lenglet scored.

His header, from another set-piece, put Spurs into second. Marseille were in the Europa League. But they pushed for a winner, and Spurs broke in injury time. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struck a stunning effort into the top corner.

It sees Spurs go through as group winners, and Marseille crash out of Group D. Frankfurt go through in second, Sporting in third. Captain Lloris was excellent and got the MOTM award, and responded: “This is for the team”.

Lloris gives brilliant reaction to man-of-the-match trophy

What a performance from Tottenham in the second half. But it is a tale that Spurs fans are becoming accustomed to under Conte. The loss to Newcastle, Spurs improved but lost 2-1 after the break. They should have beat Sporting.

That is, after Marcus Edwards’ opener. Against Bournemouth, they were 2-0 down but won 3-2. Then again in France, they go behind but leave it late to secure a win. A stunning, superb win. Huge character, but question marks again.

Why are they being instructed to play so negatively in the first half? The defence is not good enough to simply allow clubs to come on to them, and then play on the counter. Spurs are better when given the freedom to attack.
