Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld upset supporters at the weekend after the way he praised Romelu Lukaku.

Alderweireld proclaimed Lukaku to be the best, or the GOAT – a jokey acronym for Greatest Of All Time, after his World Cup brace against Tunisia.

While Alderweireld is obviously caught up in his World Cup adventure, Tottenham fans found it disrespectful towards Spurs forward and teammate Harry Kane, especially considering the defender has been linked strongly with a transfer to Lukaku’s Manchester United.

Kane responded in the best way possible – by scoring a hat-trick for England against Panama.

The England and Tottenham forward now has five goals compared to Lukaku’s four, making Alderweireld’s message look even more ill advised and even a bit desperate, less than 24 hours after he posted it.

England and Belgium face off on Thursday evening, with Lukaku and Kane going head to head, if they both start.

Lukaku picked up a knock against Tunisia and could be rested.
