Tottenham Hotspur landed one big signing on deadline as right back Emerson Royal from Barcelona – and they’re already impressed.
The Brazilian ace only joined Barcelona this summer after two-and-a-half years at Real Betis thanks to a co-ownership agreement.
With two other right backs already at the club in Sergino Dest and Sergi Roberto, Barcelona decided to take the quick profit on Emerson and sell him to Tottenham.
The 22-year-old will now fight for first-team football with Japhet Tanganga, and it sounds like Tottenham coaches are already impressed.
Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold has now spoken about Emerson and just why Tottenham love him.
Gold claims he has spoken to people in and around Tottenham, and they think his fitness levels are absolutely ‘incredible’ whilst being ‘athletically superb’.
Tottenham maybe don’t think Emerson is technically great, certainly not compared to other Brazilian right backs of the generation, but he will be able to ‘motor’ up and down the right side.
“Those I spoke to in and around Tottenham have said that the feeling they have got about him is that he is athletically superb, his fitness levels are incredible, he’s going to motor up and down that side.”
“They think technically maybe he’s not entirely what you expect from a Brazilian, but certainly has the ability to get forward,” he added.
That gives Tottenham a different option to Tanganga, who has impressed as a defensively-minded right back in Nuno Espirito Santo’s first three league games.
Emerson is a more expansive option in that role, providing Nuno with the options he’s looking for in Tottenham’s back line.
