Spurs’ new stadium will host its first rugby game next March.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has received glowing praise by Saracens coach Alex Sanderson following the date confirmation of the state-of-the-art arena hosting their first rugby game (Premiership website).
The derby between Sarries and London rivals Harlequins, which was previously hosted at the London Stadium and at Wembley Stadium, is to be played at the Champions League finalists’ new home on Saturday 28 March 2020.
As reported in the Evening Standard, it was announced in April that Saracens had struck a five-year deal with Spurs to play their annual ‘Big Game’ at the club’s new £1billion arena, which will also host NFL matches in future.
“I’m really looking forward to going down there, the boys have been down there, and they’ve said it’s worth every penny of the billion pounds it cost,” Sanderson told the Evening Standard.
“When we started using the bigger stadiums people said we wouldn’t get any crowds, then we started getting 60,000, 80,000, and these younger lads that are coming through – they won’t get that kind of experience – for some of them it’ll be the biggest game they’ll play ever.”
The fixture is due to take place during the football international break in March, so there will be no clash with any potential Tottenham game.
After numerous delays last term, Spurs finally left Wembley and moved back to N17 in April, inaugurating the 62,062-seater ground with a number of test events followed by a Premier League game against Crystal Palace.
