Dortmund are said to be keen on Witsel, but surely he would be Spurs perfect summer signing.
Tottenham Hotspur’s 2017-18 Champions League opponents Borussia Dortmund have reportedly made an offer worth £17.8million for midfielder Axel Witsel, but Spurs must do everything they can to beat Dortmund to the punch.
Belgian outlet HLN claim that 29-year-old midfielder Witsel wants to leave Chinese Super League side Quanjian, just 18 months after first joining the club from Zenit St. Petersburg.
It is believed that Dortmund have tabled an offer for the former Benfica powerhouse, who is believed to be earning a stupendous £300,000 a week. But he is more than aware that to return to Europe, he must take a pay cut.
Indeed, the report claims that Dortmund will only be able to afford around the £200,000-a-week mark, and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy should do all he can to muster up the necessary funds to bring Witsel to north London.
The reported transfer fee is certainly somewhat on the cheap side, with 96-time Belgium international Witsel renowned as one of the best holding midfielders in world football.
But what would make him a huge success at Spurs is that he would be surrounded by his Belgium teammates. Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele all impressed alongside Witsel at the World Cup.
Witsel has a contract at Quanjian until December 2019 and that is likely to make him available with the Chinese side looking to avoid losing their star man on a free transfer.
Spurs desperately need a central midfielder, with Harry Winks and Victor Wanyama’s absences last season leaving Mauricio Pochettino with just Dembele and Eric Dier to choose from at times.
But with the north Londoners looking to fight on four fronts once again, a new central midfielder is a must and for a bargain £17.8million, Witsel must be at the top of Pochettino and Levy’s shortlist.
