Lyon’s shock 2-1 victory at Manchester City on Wednesday night has grabbed headlines – and turned eyes onto some of their top players.

The French side raced into a 2-0 first half lead as Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir found the net at the Etihad Stadium, before Bernardo Silva pulled one back for City.

Lyon have already managed to fend off interest in Fekir, but more clubs may be keen on their players; particularly midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan from Amiens before making his move permanent earlier this year, having starred as one of the brightest up-and-coming box-to-box midfielders in Europe.

One club massively keen on Ndombele was Tottenham Hotspur, and L’Equipe reported just last month that Spurs were considering a last-gasp bid to sign him before the transfer deadline.

There’s no doubting that the Frenchman would be the ideal replacement for Mousa Dembele in the heart of the Spurs midfield, and fans have been clamouring for his signature for some time, particularly after last night’s performance, but is it even realistic anymore?

Early in the summer, Spurs were a feasible destination for Ndombele, but more and more clubs are becoming aware of his quality, and the more he impresses against the likes of City – who ironically need a midfielder themselves – the less likely it is that Spurs will in the race to sign him.

This is a club who didn’t bring in any signings over the summer and have often dallied on targets, such as Jack Grealish, or lost out to other clubs for them, and they may now be an unrealistic destination given his continued impressive performances.

Ndombele’s value is rising and rising, most likely already beyond Tottenham’s club record fee, and with Daniel Levy keeping a close grasp on the finances, Spurs’ dream signing seems to already be unlikely.
