Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing the Roma midfielder.
According to a report from Calcio Mercato News, Tottenham are interested in signing Steven N’Zonzi in the summer, but Mauricio Pochettino moving for the Frenchman doesn’t quite add up.
The Roma ace is undoubtedly talented, but at the age of 30, it could be argued that his career is already on the downward spiral.
Pochettino has forged a name for himself within the game for his ability to bring young players through, and aside from Fernando Llorente, he has never signed someone who is in the twilight of their career.
Tottenham undoubtedly need to bolster their midfield ranks in the summer, having lost Mousa Dembele to China last month, but at the same time, it would be no surprise to see Pochettino give Oliver Skipp a chance to prove himself on a regular basis.
N’Zonzi, a World Cup winner with France, is a combative midfielder and he excels when breaking up play and winning the ball back from the opposition.
Spurs already have two players in that mould in the shape of Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama, so surely Poch should be looking to sign a box-to-box player with creative nouse to replace Dembele.
Tottenham seem to be on the cusp on achieving something very special, and their player recruitment over the next couple of transfer windows will be absolutely pivotal to their hopes of achieving success.
N’Zonzi would be a decent addition for sure, but he’s not what Spurs need right now.
The Frenchman would have been ideally suited to Tottenham three or four years ago, but times have changed, as have the north London outfit’s needs.
