Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly keen on Timo Werner this summer, but ultimately bolstered their options with a move for Fernando Llorente.

By the end of the summer transfer window, Tottenham fans appeared to be rather positive about the business the club had done in the final weeks before the deadline.
Arguably, the smartest deal Spurs completed was the signing of Fernando Llorente, after the excellent season he enjoyed with Swansea City.
The Spaniard brings experience and should give Harry Kane the kind of cover that Vincent Janssen has struggled to provide since his own arrival last summer.

But based on another Tottenham target’s form this season, perhaps it would have been worth Daniel Levy breaking the bank to sign him rather than pursue a deadline day deal for Llorente.

Werner enjoyed a stunning season in the Bundesliga last year, scoring 21 times for surprise packages RB Leipzig, and his form for club and country at the start of this season suggest that he will be anything but a one season wonder.
The former Stuttgart man scored a brace in the top flight win over Freiburg before the international break, and the break has seen Werner help Germany put themselves to within touching distance of booking their place at next year’s World Cup.
The forward scored three times in the two games to take his tally for his country to six goals in just eight caps since making his debut for the senior side earlier this year.
Given how Werner has started the season therefore, it would hardly be a surprise to see his value soar over the coming months.
So while Levy may have been hesitant about paying big money for Werner this summer – and the deal for Llorente may well be more than vindicated – perhaps he may left ruing the decision not to break the bank during this last window as his asking price could be on the verge of becoming a lot more eye-watering in the near future.
