Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing the Roma hitman.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will surely be looking to bring in an establish striker this month, with Harry Kane set to be out until at least March with an ankle injury.
According to Italian media outlet La Repubblica, one of Spurs’ transfer targets is Roma hitman Edin Dzeko, and whilst the Bosnian would be a sound addition for the club, a move for him would reek of short-sightedness.
The striker has been in superb form for Roma, since moving to the Italian capital from Manchester City in the summer of 2015, for just £10 million, banging in 80 goals in 158 appearances in all competitions.
At 32, however, Dzeko is arguably already on the downhill curve of his career, and it could be argued that he would struggle to adapt to the ferocious pace of the Premier League again, having been away for so long.
He would undoubtedly be able to do a decent job in Kane’s absence, but when the England international returns to action, what then for the Roma man?
The other problem that Dzeko would face at Tottenham is that he is predominantly a target man, who is at his best when playing with his back to goal.
Spurs rarely play direct football, and prefer to carve out opportunities with intricate play in and around the penalty box.
With Pochettino’s penchant for working with and developing youngsters, Tottenham should surely be looking at a more youthful model than Dzeko, and make a signing with one eye on the future, rather than just for the here and now.
