Tottenham are reportedly keen on luring Jan Oblak to North London from Atletico Madrid despite the attention of Manchester United – and such a signing would surely tempt Harry Kane into signing a new deal, for two reasons.
Oblak, 29, is considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Hugo Lloris is up there, but arguably a level below that of Atleti’s Slovenian goalkeeper. Lloris is now 35, and is about to enter the final 18 months of his current Tottenham deal.
It would be a marquee signing. One expected of a team that are challenging for titles. Oblak is probably in the top three in the world in his position – much like England skipper Kane is, when it comes to no.9 centre-forwards.
There is doubt regarding Kane’s future with his deal, like Lloris, ending in 2024. But with Conte in charge and Spurs looking stronger than ever, there is every chance Kane wants to stay. Bayern Munich are showing plenty of interest.
Signing Oblak would tempt Kane into signing new Tottenham deal
There are two reasons Kane will be tempted. The first is obvious. If Kane is to stay at Tottenham, he will want the club to continue showing ambition in the transfer market. The signing of Oblak is enormous ambition, as high as it can get.
Oblak immediately improves a Tottenham side that are already showing they could fight for the Premier League title. But the other reason is from a financial point of view. Kane is Tottenham’s joint-top earner, on £200,000 a week.
But Oblak earns far north of Kane, on £253,000 a week at Atletico Madrid. So, if Oblak was to join Spurs, he would surely request a similar sort of wage – or a figure perhaps north of his current deal. It would make Kane second highest.
That would not sit right with the England skipper. He is renowned as Tottenham’s best player and will want his contract to show that. It means Tottenham will have to hand Kane a pay rise on his already, big wages – further tempting Kane.
