The Leicester City winger is exactly what Tottenham Hotspur need.

According to a recent report from the Times, Tottenham Hotspur looked into the possibility of signing Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez last month, only to be swiftly rebuffed by the Premier League champions.

That is no surprise given the Foxes’ struggles and their need to keep hold of their best players in a bid to remain in the top flight next season. However, if the worst happens and Claudio Ranieri’s men are relegated, Spurs should make a fresh move in the summer.

After all, Mahrez will not want to play Championship football at this stage of his career and, despite his struggles this season, the malaise surrounding Leicester has affected the whole squad not only their star man.

The Algeria international has still managed to score seven goals this season and if he can rediscover his best form he is exactly what Tottenham need to reach the next level under Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham still lack numbers when it comes to attacking options and Mahrez would immediately strengthen their right side (and their goals for tally).

While Georges-Kevin N’Koudou needs time to settle and Moussa Sissoko has a long way to go to justify his price tag, Mahrez has proved he can cut it in the top flight.

He may also be available for a cut-price fee if Leicester suffer the indignity of following their title success with relegation just 12 months on.

With all that in mind, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may be watching Leicester’s fate very closely.
