There are concerns about Tottenham’s defence with Toby Alderweireld still out.
When it was revealed that Toby Alderweireld would be out for longer than expected with a thigh injury there was fear amongst Tottenham Hotspur supporters regarding the club’s defensive options.
Jan Vertonghen is an established performer, while Davinson Sanchez has settled in quickly following his summer switch from Ajax, but concerns persist about Eric Dier’s capabilities at centre-back.
The England international has much experience of playing in defence and was often deployed there as a youngster but he has looked vulnerable at times of late.
With 19-year-old Juan Foyth seemingly deemed to not yet be ready for the rigours of the Premier League, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has little choice but to carry on playing Dier if he persists with a three-man defence.
However, by switching to a back four, Dier could move into midfield, where he is far more comfortable, and Tottenham could also become more resilient defensively as a consequence.
Pochettino may be apprehensive about such an idea as it would mean altering Tottenham’s attacking options slightly, but with regards to the defence it is the best option to take, at least until Alderweireld is back available.
Tottenham, who had to come from behind to draw 1-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, are back in action tomorrow night when they face Leicester City away.
