Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with two central midfielders this past weekend.
This past weekend has seen Tottenham Hotspur linked with two talented midfielders.
Bild have reported that Tottenham are interested in Thomas Delaney, while Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport claim that Spurs remain keen on signing powerhouse Amadou Diawara.
Both operate in slightly different roles and that is why Diawara should be the priority, not Delaney.
Delaney of Werder Bremen has his talents, no question, but a powerhouse like Napoli’s Diawara cannot be overlooked.
Victor Wanyama, an £11 million signing from Southampton in 2016, was one of Tottenham’s stand-out players last season, but he has not looked at his best for much of this season and the Kenyan could do with some competition in the form of the Guinea-born defensive midfielder.
At only 20, Diawara has a massive future ahead of him in football and if Tottenham can get him now, when he’s worth only £22 million (CIES Football Observatory), then it would be a huge coup.
Someone of Delaney’s ilk isn’t needed as badly. He would be directly competing with Mousa Dembele and, as the Belgian has proven over the past three months, he is an outstanding player and despite turning 31 this summer, he has plenty more to offer the Lilywhites next season.
Delaney, 26, would improve Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but Diawara would improve the first XI and that’s what the Argentine manager should be basing his transfer decisions on.
