Tottenham should scout Jordan Torunarigha as Toby Alderweireld replacement

As the opening of the transfer window edges ever closer, many Tottenham Hotspur fans remain none the wiser regarding Toby Alderweireld’s future.

The 29-year-old’s contract situation at Spurs remains unresolved and there are genuine fears that the club may look to cash in on the defender in January.

According to the Evening Standard, Manchester United are reportedly hoping to sign Alderweireld in a cut-price fee when the market doors swing open on New Year’s Day.

In such cases, it’s best to make contingency plans and have players in mind should the Belgium international depart north London.

One defender Tottenham could look at is a 21-year-old centre-back who has been compared to none other than Bayern Munich and Germany star Jerome Boateng.

Jordan Torunarigha is a 6ft 3in, strongly built player who has come through the ranks at Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

Promoted to the senior setup two years ago, the Germany Under-21 international has made 30 appearances, scoring three goals and registering one assist – not a bad turnaround for a defender.

This season, Torunarigha has made six Bundesliga appearances, with a standout performance in the 2-0 win at Hannover earlier this month that put him in Whoscored’s Statistical Best XI of the Week.

In that game, not only did the defender successfully shore up at the back, with five clearances, an interception and two tackles, but he also scored a superb header from a set piece and provided a no-look cross from the byline for Vedad Ibisevic to nod home.

In the following match, a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Torunarigha was once again a rock at the back, with two tackles, two interceptions, seven clearances and three blocked shots, according to Whoscored.

Left-footed, comfortable on the ball and with the ability to send accurate long balls forward, Torunarigha has been compared by head coach Pal Dardai to Boateng, telling the Bundesliga website: “Jordan can become a player like him. His playing style reminds me of him.”

Contracted to the club until 2020 and valued by Transfermarkt at a fairly modest 10 million Euros (around £9million), Tottenham should definitely keep a close eye on Torunarigha.
