Newcastle United are notoriously frugal in the transfer market, to put it kindly, but Rafael Benitez has seemingly identified an ambitious target for the January transfer window.

The Magpies undeniably need a striker, having drawn a blank in four of their last five Premier League games, and only Huddersfield Town have found the back of the net fewer times than Newcastle this season.

Now, The Northern Echo report that Benitez has identified Eintracht Frankfurt striker Sebastien Haller as his number one January transfer target, after a blistering start to the new season.

With seven goals and seven assists in just 12 appearances this season, the French target man is really proving himself as a top striker in Germany, prompting new interest ahead of the January transfer window.

The problem for Newcastle is that the 24-year-old would cost a huge amount, certainly more than Newcastle’s £16million transfer record – and if any other club should be keen on signing him, it’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Towards the end of the 2015-16 season, The London Evening Standard reported that Spurs were watching Haller in action for FC Utrecht in the Netherlands, but ended up signing Vincent Janssen of AZ Alkmaar instead.

Haller has now gone and proven himself in Germany as well, and possesses abilities that Spurs will need with Fernando Llorente out of contract next summer; he’s big, strong, great in the air and also quick enough to trouble defences in behind.

Mauricio Pochettino should put Haller back on Tottenham’s radar after his outstanding start to the campaign, and provide a major blow to Benitez’s January transfer plans by bidding to bring Haller to North London instead of the North East.
