Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the £20million-rated centre-back, so what chance a swap deal?
According to a recent report from the print edition of the Sun (02/07/2017 page 63), Tottenham Hotspur have been told to pay £20million for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, so what chance a swap deal involving a Spurs player with the same price tag?
After all, the Mirror recently claimed Tottenham value Kevin Wimmer at £20million, and if the Austrian is surplus to requirements in North London – with Mawson seen as a the perfect long-term investment – a straight swap could suit all parties.
Of course much will depend on Swansea’s stance on Wimmer. The Austria international is only a year older than Mawson but he has struggled for game time at Tottenham, showing tantalising glimpses of his ability when playing alongside Toby Alderweireld back in 2016.
Last season he failed to kick on, while Mawson developed his impressive reputation at the Liberty Stadium.
If Mawson is happy at Swansea, they are unlikely to sell unless a crazy offer arrives. However, if he is enticed by the prospect of Champions League football, Tottenham should use their Wimmer card before they make a straight cash offer.
Some have suggested Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is aiming too high seeking to make a sizable profit on the Austrian who, as reported by the Telegraph, was signed for just £4.3million in 2015.
Now is the ideal chance to see if his assertion that Wimmer is worth the same as Mawson is echoed by the Swans.
