Tottenham Hotspur should consider moving for Southampton defender Jose Fonte.

Tottenham Hotspur ace Jan Vertonghen faces three months out of action with an ankle injury, leaving the club looking at ways to cover his absence.

Kevin Wimmer stepped up last season and will hope to do the same this time around, but an injury to Toby Alderweireld would leave Spurs worryingly short.

With just a couple of weeks before the transfer window closes, Tottenham should consider making a move for former Mauricio Pochettino favourite Jose Fonte.

Fonte, 33, is keen to leave Southampton and handed in a transfer request earlier this month.

The centre-back proved his quality this summer by helping lead Portugal to win Euro 2016, and has been a solid performer for the Saints since signing back in 2010.

Fonte would surely love the chance to add to his medal by joining a Tottenham side which are battling for the title, and could consider a bit-part role at Spurs as a fair trade off.

The defender was a regular under Pochettino at Southampton and would not need any adjustment to his new club if he signed at Spurs.

Tottenham can cope in Vertonghen’s absence, but the chance to sign Fonte, who The Mirror report is valued at £10 million, should be considered as it would ensure they are covered in case of any further injuries or Wimmer failing to recapture last season’s form.
