Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want Genk’s Sander Berge.
Tottenham Hotspur are almost certainly in the market for a new central midfielder or two in January – and new links suggest Genk’s Sander Berge is a major target.
Bleacher Report claim that Tottenham scouts want Berge, and believe Spurs need to move quickly to land the Norwegian for a fee of around £15million in the January transfer window.
Tottenham were linked with Berge late in the summer window but no move materialised, and whilst Spurs may finally firm up their interest in January, other clubs are now thought to be keen.
Tuttomercatoweb reported just days ago that Fiorentina have now joined the race for Berge, meaning Spurs could face a battle with the Italian side for Berge’s signature.
However, even if Spurs may not be able to challenge financially with some of the Premier League’s top clubs, they should be able to blow Fiorentina out of the water with a move for Berge.
For starters, Spurs are more likely to pay up £15million than Fiorentina, who have only paid that kind of money for a player twice in their history according to Transfermarkt, with Juan Cuadrado and Nuno Gomes signed in 2013 and 2000 respectively.
In terms of wages, Spurs – even with a fairly modest wage bill compared to Premier League rivals – should be able to trump any offer from Fiorentina, whilst on the pitch, Champions League football and playing in Tottenham’s new stadium should be appealing too.
If it’s Spurs v Fiorentina, Mauricio Pochettino’s men should be favourites for the 20-year-old signature, and they should certainly be looking to snap up the powerful 6ft 4in midfielder before anybody else can in January.
