Tottenham Hotspur have recently been linked with two midfielders and one is by far the better option to immediately improve their squad.

Switzerland's Denis Zakaria

According to a report from Swiss newspaper Blick, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Young Boys midfielder Denis Zakaria, but if Spurs want a new player for the centre of the park they would be wise to focus on another alleged target – Jean Michael Seri.

As reported by the Guardian earlier this month, the North London club are keeping a close eye on the Nice player, and he is a far better option than Zakaria.

At first glance, the need for additional options in the centre of the park is minimal given the players already at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal. However, the Tottenham boss will not want to be caught short if injuries take their toll next season, while the desire to challenge on all fronts will mean a rethink in terms of squad depth.

Zakaria is 20 and has played 63 times for Young Boys to date, scoring two goals and providing three assists in the process.

He is predominantly a holding midfielder although he can operate further forward if required, and how Tottenham proceed could be decided by the future of Eric Dier.

If the England international remains at Spurs next season, a young back-up willing to bide their time is the best option, and Zakaria certainly fits the bill.

In contrast, 25-year-old Seri is ready for regular Premier League football now and his return of six goals and nine assists this season shows he is the box-to-box midfielder Tottenham really should be looking at to strengthen in time for the twin challenge of domestic and European honours.

The Ivorian has experience of playing in different countries, having already featured in France and Portugal, and with just two years remaining on his current deal he could be available for a decent price.

Zakaria has a deal until 2020 and he is not the player Tottenham should be looking at as they bid to take another step forward next season; the question is: Does Pochettino agree?
