Teddy Sheringham has given his honest opinion about Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium and what it could mean not only for the team, but also for Mauricio Pochettino’s future at the club.
After months of delays, the Spurs stadium is finally up and running, with two test events with increasing levels of attendances needed for the club to achieve a former safety certificate.
The first of those two events – an Under-18 Premier League game against Southampton – has already taken place, with 28,987 seeing the Lilywhites run out 3-1 winners.
This weekend, a Tottenham Legends squad will face their Inter Milan counterparts, and then comes the first competitive senior game, the Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on 3 April.
Sheringham, who had two spells at the club scoring 124 goals in 277 matches (Sky Sports News), has backed Tottenham to turn their new stadium into a fortress, and also thinks Pochettino will be there to oversee proceedings.
“In the long run, when it’s our home, I think it can be a real fortress,” he told Sky Sports News. “And if the quicker we get accustomed to that, the better, for the players. That’s why I think it’s good for them to be playing at the end of this season.”
Moving on the subject of Poch, Sheringham said: “For me, why would he want to be leaving Tottenham? The club is on the up, it’s a fantastic club to be involved with, I think all the supporters love him… they’re just moving into a new stadium, he’s working with some of the best players, not only in the country but in the world, if I had to bet, I would say he’s gonna be staying and looking forward to next season.”
Up next for Spurs is the trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, the Lilywhites hoping to get back to winning ways domestically and ending a four-match winless run in the league.
