Tottenham Hotspur legend Teddy Sheringham has given his opinion on the dilemma which Mauricio Pochettino could face in terms of who to select up front in the Champions League final.
Lucas Moura etched his name into Spurs folklore on Wednesday night with a stunning hat-trick in the semi-final second leg against Ajax at the Johan Crujiff ArenA to put the Lilywhites through at the Dutch side’s expense.
Tottenham have had to make do in recent weeks following Harry Kane’s ankle ligament injury but, with their season now stretching to 1 June, speculation is mounting regarding the England star potentially recovering in time.
This would present Pochettino with an issue – does he pick the club’s talisman for the final at the expense of the player who played such a key role in getting the team there in his absence?
In conversation with Love Sport Radio, Sheringham admitted that Lucas would be left “absolutely devastated” were he to be dropped despite his hat-trick in the semi-final but added that “you want your big players playing” in big games.
“You’d be absolutely devastated. If you scored a hat trick in the semi-final, then [Pochettino] says you’re not playing in the final, you’d be devastated,” Sheringham said. “But the manager has got a decision to make, hopefully he’ll have all his players fit and raring to go but that’s what he’s there for, to make these decisions.
“I have heard silly comments that Tottenham are better off without Kane and they get better results, but not the big games. When you have your big games, you want your big players playing. If Kane is fit and raring to go, I wouldn’t be surprised if he puts him straight back in.”
Tottenham will face Premier League rivals Liverpool in the Champions League final, which takes place at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano.
