Jan Vertonghen has been linked away from Tottenham Hotspur in recent days, and his sale would be disastrous for the club.

As reported by the Sun, French champions Paris Saint-Germain are considering an ambitious swoop to try to sign Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The 31-year-old, who has just returned from a summer of World Cup action with Belgium, has been with Spurs since 2012, and is a huge fan favourite.

The former Ajax player has made 180 Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites, and has been a regular in the side ever since his move to become former Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas’ second signing that summer.

The Sun claims PSG manager Thomas Tuchel is a keen admirer of Vertonghen, who would leave behind a huge hole if he was sold.

Tottenham cannot entertain the idea of cashing in, despite the defender’s advancing years, because he suits Mauricio Pochettino’s system so well.

Vertonghen is extremely versatile, which arguably makes him more important than fellow defender Toby Alderweireld, and the fact he is left-footed makes him crucial for team balance.

Alderweireld has long been linked with a move away from the club this summer and the Independent recently claimed that Manchester United are still confident of landing him in the next few weeks, but losing Vertonghen would arguably be just as damaging, if not slightly more so.

Last year’s club Player of the Season, has been a pillar of consistency and is undoubtedly one of the best and most underrated centre-backs in the Premier League. With only one year remaining on his current deal, Spurs need to get to work on offering him fresh terms.
