Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has spoken highly of teammate Juan Foyth, describing the 21-year-old as an “amazing talent” and tipping him to potentially being a star for Argentina at the Copa America (official Spurs website).

Sanchez, who is representing Colombia at the competition, started for Los Cafeteros in their opener against the 14-time tournament winners in their opening game on 15 June, while Foyth was named on the bench for the Albiceleste.

Foyth has been on Tottenham’s books since the summer of 2017 when he joined the Premier League club from Estudiantes but has had to bide his time, with 25 senior appearances under his belt thus far according to Transfermarkt.

“I talked a bit with Juan after our game,” Davinson, who has made 78 Tottenham appearances (Transfermarkt), told the official Spurs website.

“He’s still young but he’s an amazing talent. He could be a star in this competition. We’ll see. He trains well, he is a great person, a good guy. He deserves so much because he has worked so hard to be in these moments.”

Colombia had not beated Argentina in 12 years but they made a good start to proceedings in Brazil as two late goals from Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata at the Fonte Nova Arena gave them a 2-0 win, before Qatar and Paraguay were also beaten.

Both teams are now in the quarter-finals, with Colombia meeting Chile on 29 June at the Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, and Argentina locking horns with Venezuela a day earlier at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, so both players will be hoping to be part of their nations’ ongoing quest for glory.
