Tottenham had other options in mind though and one of them was Johnstone.
The former Manchester United stopper had impressed at West Bromwich Albion and decided to leave the Baggies at the end of his contract.
Football London claimed that Johnstone was all set to sign for Tottenham on a free transfer – but there was a twist in the tale.
90Min claimed that Johnstone actually rejected Tottenham and instead joined London neighbours Crystal Palace instead.

Johnstone hasn’t made a single Premier League appearance for Palace though and has been stuck behind Vicente Guaita.
Johnstone is now sidelined with a calf problem but Palace may decide to cut ties with him this summer.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon claims that Palace would sell Johnstone for around £5million to £6million at the end of the season.
Sheffield United and former club West Bromwich Albion are both interested in Johnstone and could move if they win promotion.
The move to Selhurst Park really hasn’t worked out for Johnstone, though it’s hard to say his fortunes would have been any better at Tottenham.
The 2023-24 season has to be about first-team football for Johnstone and a move to a promoted club may well appeal to the 29-year-old.
