Tottenham Hotspur are running out of time to land players before the World Cup begins.
With June now upon us, transfer business is starting to heat up, but Tottenham Hotspur don’t appear to be close to making any new signings just yet.
Liverpool have already secured Monaco’s Fabinho, whilst Manchester United are looking to land Diego Dalot and Fred, with Manchester City keen to push through a big-money double deal for Napoli’s Jorginho and Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez.
Even with a limited budget, Arsenal are pushing for Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, but Spurs seemingly aren’t nearing any new arrivals right now.
That may be a major disappointment for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who told The Independent in April that he wanted to get signings in quickly this time, ahead of the World Cup.
Business has been done late in recent transfer windows, with Pau Lopez, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Moussa Sissoko joining on deadline day in August 2016, before a late spree saw Paulo Gazzaniga, Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez and Fernando Llorente sign in the final days of August 2017.
This time, Pochettino wanted his business done earlier to save another last-minute scramble, and wanted to sign players before the World Cup in Russia kicks off, in order to prevent asking prices sky-rocketing as a result of performances on the world’s biggest stage.
With just 10 days to go until the start of the competition, Spurs are quickly running out of time to give Pochettino what he wanted, and now risk heading into the World Cup with no new signings on board.
That may result in top targets becoming even more expensive if they impress, and as Daniel Levy is never one for extravagant purchases, Spurs may even risk missing out on targets this summer – and Pochettino will surely be hoping for some movement in the coming days.
